Giclée is a term that artists use in preference to "printed on an inkjet printer" to differentiate the quality from what you might get from a typical home printer. Quality inkjet printing can produce results with image longevity, sharpness and gradation of tone in excess of that produced by printing on conventional photographic paper. In my case prints are produced using Epson dye inks which have been tested with a claimed life of 99 years if framed under glass. Prints may be printed with or without borders at A3 or A4 size and also be printed to 18" x 12" to fit within a mount at this popular size. Printing may be on high quality Epson photo papers, the economical but high quality Permajet Matt Plus or alternatively on premium art papers for even greater impact.

Typical pricing:

An A4 borderless print on Epson Heavyweight Matte paper (197gsm) £16.50 inc P&P to UK mainland

An A4 borderless print on a Premium Cotton Rag art paper (290gsm) £21.50 inc P&P to UK mainland

An A3 borderless print printed using pigment inks on Permajet Matt Plus paper (251gsm) £37.50 inc P&P to UK mainland

A 18" x 12" print on 19" x 13" Permajet Matt Plus paper (251gsm) printed using pigment inks £45.00 inc P&P to UK mainland

Matt finishes have a smooth, non-glare surface. They have a lower contrast when printed and are often used to enhance the texture of a print. Fingerprints and smudges are not so visible and it works very well with black-and-white photographs. Photos can be viewed accurately from a wide range of angles. Most photographers will prefer to present their work as art on matt paper.

Options with a punchy gloss finish are available but only to A4 borderless size. Glossy photos are printed on coated paper with a very smooth, shiny reflective surface. Glossy finishes have a high-contrast appearance and look slick to the touch when not under glass. This finish has an excellent dynamic range and color - more "pop" than matt paper, though this may be less noticeable once framed and viewing from a wider angle can be problematical.

Finally, Permajet Smooth Pearl has a slight gloss with a subtle texture. It has a deeper color-saturation than matt and has higher contrast. It a useful compromise between gloss and matte.
