The reason why others have allowed me to portray them naked is partly that I have put myself in their position, put myself in front of my own lens. I did it because I needed it. I felt different to other men and the nude self portraiture help me understand that the difference was fine, and maybe even to be celebrated
These images date back to 1986, 31 years, and to me at least are far more personal than my nudes in the environment. There was no internet then, so none of the motivation that might move some to do nude self portraits now, they were done for me. Most are on film and for many I have retained the blemishes, accentuating the aged feel, but some are more recent, cleaner digital images.
It is my strongly held view that there is nothing offensive about any aspect of the human body, especially when presented in a way that makes an artistic statement or conveys its beauty. By normalising rather than sensationalising nudity we as a society will all be better off, more comfortable in our own skins.
